VE8RCS

"REAL COLD SPOT"

CFS Alert NWT, has the privilege of being the world's most northerly, permanently settled, outpost in the world. Until recent history (10 years) the only means of communication with the outside world from Alert was with HF radio. The military set up a Canadian Forces Amateur Radio Service (CFARS) station at Alert for the purpose of personal communications.

At a CFARS station a military operator (usually an amateur) makes phone patches to home units for the morale of the members serving an attached posting at an isolated unit. Over the years VE8RCS has made thousands of these contacts with the help of dedicated Amateurs in the south.

About 10 years ago, with the advance of technology, the military was able to install a real time satellite to Alert.   The station was then relegated to being a backup in case of primary comms outages and for the personal use of any Amateur posted in Alert.  This past summer with the downsizing of CFS Alert the equipment was sold off and a chapter in the station's history closed.
